Support of the District's Long Range Facilities Plan

The only thing worse than no information is misinformation. So here’s the correct information.

Some citizens are being led to believe that if they vote “yes” on levy questions in the November election, the money that’s intended to fund programming will actually be used to help pay for the long range facilities plan.

Fact: Funding for the operating levy and funding for the long-range facilities plan are very separate. Because of funding shortages from the State, the Duluth schools need money from an operating levy whether there were a long range facilities plan or not. Funds from the operating levy will go to help keep budget cuts from hitting the classroom. It will help us keep more teachers, keep class sizes down and maintain more of what we have right now.

We think it’s irresponsible for opponents of the long range facilities plan to knowingly try to confuse the public. The uses for the money are quite different, but they’re both needed. Our kids need us to support the operating levy so their class sizes don’t grow to hinder learning, and our kids also need modern facilities in which to learn that are up to code, and provide safety and security for their teachers and themselves.

Members of Let Duluth Vote, the group whose petition has allowed it to submit what it’s calling ‘Plan B,’ are claiming the school district has no intention of doing anything but undermining any alternative to the Red Plan.

Fact: To the contrary, the district has been waiting to assist Let Duluth Vote in this process since August 29. Once Let Duluth Vote contacts the district, the district will pay for an independent consultant to assist in formulating the necessary details for review by the Minnesota Department of Education. It’s in the best interests of the community to move quickly so the plans can be viewed side by side, but to date Let Duluth Vote still has not provided any details of its Plan B.
