Support of the District's Long Range Facilities Plan

If you want children to grow up here—then raise their families here—we need a long range plan.

Duluth schools provide a quality education—thanks to our great teachers and a supportive, involved community. But with declining enrollment, we don’t need as many classrooms or facilities as we used to.

What’s more, many of our current school buildings were built for the needs of students three and four generations ago. They no longer meet the today’s requirements—and some of them have been declared nearly obsolete by state education experts.

We must bring Duluth’s public schools into the 21st Century. They need to be brought up to code, and made as safe and secure as possible. They need more and better computer equipment, and well-stocked libraries and science labs. They need to meet environmental standards and to create a positive, progressive educational environment.

To make this happen, our schools need to be upgraded, and we need to follow a solid, strategic plan. We can no longer take a “wait and see” approach, and there is no band-aid solution. One, thoughtful plan can change the future for our students, and that plan is the Red Plan.

If we take the necessary steps now, we’ll be able to provide a quality educational experience for generations to come.

  • Quality learning environments have a significant impact on a student’s ability to learn

  • The misinformation about the Red Plan is hurting the district and our community

  • A plan to move forward is better than standing still with no plan

  • We can no longer ignore the needs of our children

  • Costs will increase if we delay

  • We cannot afford operating costs on facilities we no longer need

  • Our enrollment has been decreasing for the past two decades and will continue for at least five years

  • A vibrant school system attracts businesses and people to a community—that means more jobs and a reversal of the enrollment decline
